The History Of The Honda Type-R

TYPE HONDA TYPE R HISTORY Honda's Type R models are the special performance editions of their respective model families, dubbed 'race cars for the road.' The new Civic Type R launches this summer, complete with a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine, one which boasts a 167mph top speed. That's fast! In Honda's own words, this new Civic is the fastest and most extreme Type R in history. To celebrate, here's the complete history of the Honda Type R models. 1992: HONDA NSX TYPE R The Honda NSX was the very first Type R model which launched back in 1992, available only in Japan. Honda's goal was to release a road-going racing car, with: 3.0-litre naturally aspirated V6 engine. 4.9sec 276bhp at 7,300rpm. 217lb ft of torque at 5,400Orpm. Weight reduction to 1230 kg from the normal NSX weight of 1350 kg. More aggressive suspension. 3.0L V6 R 276bhp 1995: HONDA INTEGRA TYPE R Another Japanese exclusive was the Honda Integra Type R in 1995, offering: 6.Osec 1.8-litre cylinder engine. 197bhp at 8.000rpm. 134lb ft of torque at 7,500rpm. Weight reduction from the standard integra. Close-ratio 5-speed manual transmission. 1.8L 4CYL R 197bhp 1997: HONDA CIVIC TYPE R The first Civic to receive Type-R treatment was a third Japanese exclusive, based upon the sixth generation model, which sported: 1.6-litre four cylinder engine. 183bhp at 8,200rpm. A strategically seam welded monocoque chassis, used to improve chassis rigidity. 6.8sec * 1.6L 4CYL The interior of the first generation Civic Type-R offered red seats, red door cards, a leather wrapped steering wheel, Type R floor mats and R 183bhp titanium shift knob. The vehicle's B16B engine boasted one of the highest power output per litre of all time for a naturally-aspirated engine. 1998: HONDA INTE GRA TYPE R 1998's Integra Type R was the first to reach both European and American shores and became a cult car amongst Honda enthusiasts, despite only 3,823 being produced. This model offered: 1.8-litre four-cylinder engine. Weight of just 1100kg. Top speed of 134mph. 6.5sec 1.8L 4CYL 187bhp at 8,0o0rpm. R 187bhp In 1998, the vehicle was available only in Championship White, in Flamenco Black Pearl in 2000, Phoenix Yellow and in 2000 and 2001 and Nighthawk Black Pearl in 2001. 1999: HONDA ACCORD TYPER RJ02 FFI Based on Honda's big, practical Saloon, in 1999 the Accord Type R was launched, unlike those before it, offering a four door configuration. In comparison to the early, Japanese only Type R's, this was a European exclusive. The vehicle boasted: 6.7sec 2.2-litre four-cylinder engine. 217bhp at 7,200 rpm. 164 Ib ft of torque at 6,700 rpm. Optional distinctive tall and functional rear spoiler wing. * 2.2L 4CYL R 217bhp 2001: HONDA INT EGRA TYPE R The second generation Integra Type R in 2001 was another Japanese-only model yet the first to offer a 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine producing over 200bhp. () 5.9sec 2.0-litre cylinder engine. 218bhp at 8,0o0rpm. 152lb ft of torque at 7,500rpm. Recaro bucket seats. * 1.8L 4CYL High level rear spoiler. R 197bhp 2001: HONDA CIVIC TYPE R REDS 2001 saw the first Civic Type R released in Europe (despite a number of JDM 1997 Civic Type-R's being imported), bringing the attention of the vehicle to a much wider UK audience. This model was manufactured in the UK at Honda's Swindon plant and won 'Hot Hatch of the Year' numerous times from Top Gear, Fifth Gear and What Car? The vehicle offered drivers: 6.4sec 197bhp 2.0-litre engine. 144lb ft of torque. A stiffer chassis than the standard model. A close-ratio six-speed gearbox. 2.0L 4CYL R 197bhp The 2001 Civic Type R was great fun to drive and marked a popular alternative for mainstream drivers. 2002: HONDA NSX TYPE R This Japanese only NSX Type R (known as the NSX-R) featured a 3.2-litre V6 engine which provided 276bhp and 224lb ft of torque and weighed in at just 1270kg. In comparison to the original NSX Type R, this model offered a more aggressive suspension. 4,4sec 3.2L V6 The NSX-R proved competitive on the track against considerably higher-powered cars. R 276bhp 2007: HONDA CIVIC TYPE R RX58 HUV The 2007 Civic Type R was, to many, a disappointment compared to previous models, offering, however when you look at the specs, you still see a car which offered 197bhp with only a slightly reduced torque of 142lb ft. 6.4sec 2.0L 4CYL This model retained the close-ratio six speed R 197bhp gearbox with a body more akin to a striking hatchback. 2007: HONDA CIVIC TYPE R (JDM) Whereas the Europeans got the above, the Japanese saw the 2007 Civic Type R as a chunky, bodykitted four-door saloon, complete with a 2.0-litre VTEC four-pot engine. 6.0sec Boasting 222bhp (EDM offered just 197bhp) and 158lb ft of torque (142lb ft for the EDM), it's easy to see why many felt disappointed with what the European model offered. * 2.0L 4CYL R 222bhp 2015: HONDA CIVIC TYPE R After a five-year wait, this year see's the 2015 Honda Civic Type R become available in showrooms. This is the world's most keenly anticipated 'hot hatch' and looks set to mark new standards in the high-performance front-wheel drive hatchback segment. The 2015 Civic Type R's blistering performance comes from: 5.7sec An all-new, direct-injected turbocharged 2.0 litre VTEC TURBO petrol engine. More than 276bhp. 2.0L 4CYL R 306bhp The car will handle a 0-to-10 km/h (62mph) sprint is in just 5.7 seconds and has a top speed of 167 mph (270 km/h). A number of innovative new, unique, suspension systems, are in place to produce rewarding handling characteristics and to maximise power transfer to the road, all complemented by Dual Pinion Electric Power Steering. The introduction of a +R button which increases the response of various chassis and drivetrain systems sets to be a popular feature which results in an even more intense driving experience and a GT option is available as well as the standard. The 2015 Honda Civic Type R will be in showrooms this summer. Honda UK has confirmed that the 2015 Civic Type R will be priced sub £30k with the entry level model costing £29,995 and the GT version costing an additional £2,300 at £32,295, offering a whole host of extras.
