The Evolution of the Perfect Female Body

Evolution THE OF THE Perfect FEMALE BODY Body shapes, just like skinny jeans and rara skirts, go in and out of fashion, the last century has seen the idealised version of the perfect women go from curvaceous to extremely thin, to strong and fit and back again. Would the women of the 1930s get a second glance from today's Hollywood producers, model casting agents or even you for that matter? Take a look at how the perfect women has evolved over the last 11 decades 1900s Gibson THE GIRL The epitome of ideal feminine beauty as illustrated by Charles Dana Gibson. Tall with large boobs, a narrow waist and wide hips. "I saw her on the streets, in the churches, the theatres. I saw her everywhere and doing everything." - Charles Dana Gibson CAMILLE CLIFFORD when asked how he created the Gibson Girl. 1910s Women OF WW1 Long and Lean. Strong women, built for survival. 283 Women wore girdles that pulled in and elongated the waist and thinned the hips - not forgetting those massive bloomers! LUCILLE BALL 1920s Flappers A'ND FEMINISM The flapper girl had a very different look to her curvaceous predecessors, not wanting to flaunt their feminine figures they opted for an androgynous frame. O The 1920s girl flirted with danger, smoking and drinking and wearing dresses that often showed their knees. LOUISE BROOKS She sported an athletic build, short hair and had small boobs - if she didn't, she tightly wrapped her chest in fabric to make them appear smaller. 1930s Slender AND FEMININE I The 30s saw the return of boobs and close fitting clothes that emphasised small waists and hips. It was the start of the diet crazes where women wanted to look slender while still maintaining their curves. Role Models: Bettie Davis and Mae West BETTIE DAVIS "Cultivate Your Curves - they may be dangerous but they won't be avoided" - Mae West. 1940s THE Sexual, I THE REVOLUTION Curves appeared in Vogue! The padded bra was born! The ideal body shape was sexualised - it was all about big breasts, slim waists and large hips. Hem lines got higher than ever before and BETTY GRABLE with it came the need for a BETTER body. 1950s Glamourous HOURGLASS I The 50's took the perfect women from the 40's and glamorised her. She had voluptuous breasts, a shapely bum I and a tiny waist cinched in with belts and great tailoring. Marilyn Monroe was the personification of the perfect women. "The body is meant to be seen, not all covered up" - Marilyn Monroe. MARILYN MONROE 1960s Long Legs ANDO MINI SKIRTS O The 60s saw the beginning of the androgynous waif. IO Twiggy's modelling career took off, she became hugely popular and so did her figure. Gone were the curves – the boyish body was back and thinner than ever. TWIGGY For the first time, a very underweight, slim and slender figure was something to strive for. 1970s Skinny GOT OSKINNIER Women were elfin like with slim, toned bodies and flowing hair. Women wanted to be sexy and sexy meant skinny. BROOKE SHIELDS 1980s I GET INTO THE Groove O In the 80s women were skinnier than ever. Thin was great, but thin and strong was incredibly sexy- enter Madonna! The 'Material Girl' along with Jane Fonda had women everywhere wanting tall, thin and toned bodies. MADONNA 1990s Hervin CHIC 'Heroin Chic' was the term coined for very thin models. Clothes were designed to help women create the perfect figure - tall and skinny with long legs (and very perky boobs!) Kate Moss was the sexiest women on the planet. "Nothing tastes as good as skinny feels." KATE MOSS - Kate Moss. 2000s 2014 BUSTY AND Bootylicious Kate Moss is still big news ...but so are curves - providing they are contained to tight bums, big boobs and toned bodies. The message in the media - be curvy yet thin. BEYONCÉ Or as Meghan Trainor rhythmically puts it, she's got 'all the right junk in all the right places'.
