Diamonds Demystified

DIAMONDS DEMYSTIFIED There's no denying that diamonds are a girl's best friend but there's more to these stunning stones than first meets the eye. From the cut and colour to clarity and carat - to truly understand the value of a diamond, you need to be familiar with the 4 C's! Carat Diamonds are weighted in carats. O A carat is further divided into hundredths, known as a point. 1/5 A ½ carat diamond could also be referred to as a 50 point diamond. CARAT OF A GRAM O A far smaller number of diamonds are found than larger diamonds, meaning a higher price per carat for larger stones due to their rarity. CT 0.25 0.33 0.50 0.75 1.00 1.25 1.50 2.00 2.50 Mм| 4.00 4.50 5.00 5.90 6.50 7.00 7.50 8.00 8.50 When there is more than one stone on a piece, such as on a cluster ring or three stone pendant, the diamonds are weighed individually. The carat weight does not necessarily correlate with the diamond's size Clarity Clarity refers to the purity of a diamond. Diamonds are formed deep inside the earth and are subject to tremendous heat and pressure which cause internal inclusions and external blemishes. Very few diamonds are flawless and they're identified and graded by these characteristics specific to their size, nature and location in/on the stone. O Diamonds are usually graded by a skilled observer with 10X magnification using a binocular microscope or 10X loupe with optimum lighting conditions. The grading categories range from flawless to imperfect: UUS Flawless Internally Flawless US Very Slightly Included Very Very Slightly Included Free from internal inclusions and external flaws Very, Very Slightly Included Diamonds are just that Very small internal and external characteristics Internal graining not visible face up and without discoloration Usually require a microscope to grade as the inclusions These are difficult to locate with 10X magnification and a skilled observer Small naturals on the girdle as long as they to not flatten it are acceptable Inclusions difficult even for a skilled observer to see SI il, i2, i3 Slightly Included Included Small to medium sized inclusions that are obvious when examined with 10K Medium to large flaws that are usually obvious to the unaided eye. magnification Durability may be an issue with the lower qualities. Usually not visible to the naked eye Colour Q Diamonds occur in all colours of the rainbow however most diamonds range from colourless to light yellow or light brown. F The GIA grading scale is used for identifying the colour of a diamond. D D = Colourless D/E/F= Colourless To The Naked Eye G/H/I/J= Near Colourless K/L/M= Faint Yellow N-Z = Continued Scale To Be Termed 'Fancy' M H. K Colourless Yellow Tinge In order to determine the specific colour range of a diamond we use a controlled lighting environment and master colour grading diamonds for comparison. As colourless diamonds are purer, they reflect light making for a brighter diamond. Cut Last but certainly not least, the cut of the diamond. The cut refers to the proportions, finish, symmetry and polish of the diamonds. These determine the intensity and brilliance of the stone. O Well-cut diamonds are the most expensive whilst poorer-cut ones typically sell for less. O The cut affects how light travels within the diamond and, as such, defines its brilliance. Too deep a cut allows light to escape from the sides causing the it to appear dark and dull; almost the opposite of what would be expected. "Cut' is also used to refer to the shape; with popular diamond cuts being: Brilliant Cut Step Cut Fancy Cut Princess Cut Mixed Cut Old European Cut Oval Cut Heart Cut Pear Cut Marquise Cut Put simply, it's no surprise that diamonds are the world's most popular gemstone and with the cut, colour, clarity and carat defining both the appearance and the price of the stone, the options really are endless..
