BREAKING ETLQUETTE ARE WE BAD GIFTERS? Forget about writing thank you notes, we have bigger problems! Emily Post would roll over in her grave if she knew how many of us were guilty of re-gifting-but it's just so easy to re-gift that sweater you'll never wear. Whether or not you plan to re-gift this year, or will be on the receiving end of a less-than-ideal present, awkward gift moments will abound this holiday season. Below, we reveal survey results that show just how uncomfortable gifting can be. AWKWARD GIFTING! A survey respondent admits: "I received an answering machine for a landline phone. I don't have a landline phone." THE JOY OF RE-GIFTING RE-GIFTING RUNS RAMPANT REGARDLESS OF INCOME. How many U.S. adults have re-gifted presents they received but disliked? 0% 10% 20% 30% 40% 50% 60% 70% 49% of those who make more than $75,000 have re-gifted. 41% 35% 33% of those who make less than $35,000 have re-gifted. 41 percent of U.S. adults admit they have re-gifted an item. 35 percent of U.S. adults have knowingly received a re-gifted item. AWKWARD GIFTING! A survey respondent admits: "I received a half-eaten box of chocolates." PLAYING SANTA Are U.S. adults planning to splurge on gifts beyond extended family and friends? 20% 18% 14% 10% 12% 11% 7% will buy for acquaintances at their (dog walker, mail delivery person, church, synagogue, or other religious center. will buy for will buy presents for coworkers and managers. will buy for those who service their needs will buy for their children's teachers. their neighbors. salon stylist, etc.). AWKWARD GIFTING! A survey respondent admits: "I received a gift card with the name of the person who just gave it to me in the "to" section." GIFT CARD FROM THE HEART Why are U.S. adults buying for those outside of extended family and friends? 0% 10% 20% 30% 40% 50% 49% say it's a "thank you" for service. 31% admit they get wrapped up in the spirit of giving and give to everyone. 18% feel obligated to give. 14% do it to reciprocate, in anticipation of receiving a gift. PRICE OF GIVING AWKWARD GIFTING! A survey respondent admits: "I received the whole Beverly Hillbillies series on VHS tapes." How do U.S. adults determine how much they will spend on a gift for those outside their extended family and friends? 39% 39 percent say they evaluate their funds after buying for close family and friends. 26% 26 percent say how close they feel to a person determines the dollar amount. 6% 6 percent base it on what they anticipate the other party will contribute, so the exchange will be of equal value. AWKWARD GIFTING! A survey respondent admits: "I received condoms and a cheesesteak." Gift giving plays an important role in the American holiday season. Most are planning to spend their hard-earned dollars on gifts for everyone, but others will be choosier. And some will happily pass on presents they've received to others. Regardless of how America will gift this year, the old adage still rings true: It's the thought that counts.
