the NAKED truth A brief history of toplessness in Canada 1903 Radical religious group the Sons of Freedom march nude in Langham, Saskatchewan to protest against materialistism. 1991 University student Gwen Jacob takes off her top on a hot, summer day in Guelph, Ontario. She is found guilty of commiting an indecent act. 1996 Ontario becomes legally topfree as a result of Gwen Jacob's criminal court challenge. The judge rules her toplessness was not sexual in nature, and therefore not indecent. 1997 The founding of the Topfree Equal Rights Association. Today, TERA continues to assist women in Canada and the USA in their legal battles for topfreedom. www.topfree.ca SSOCIATION GHTS Evangeline Godrun refuses to put her top on at a pool in Regina. Despite several appeals, she is fined for mischief. 1998 The British-Columbia Supreme Court judge rules it is legal for Linda Meyer to remove her top at a pool. 2000 2004 Inspired by bike rides organized by BC's Artists for Peace, the first World Naked Bike Ride takes place. Today, the annual event continues to take place in Canada and around the world. 2009 PETA members go topless in Edmonton, Alberta to protest against wearing fur.
