How to Avoid Spring Flooding

AVOID FLOODING THIS SPRING Don't let your home fall victim to flooding this spring! There isn't a homeowner that can fully prevent water damage under every circumstance, but you can prepare to prevent some common causes. BASEMENT PUMPS Make sure you have a sump pump and keep a battery operated pump on hand incase of a power failure. It is also beneficial to install a water alarm that goes off when water accumulates in your basement. DEBRIS REMOVAL Check for debris in your gutters, downspouts, and window wells. This will make sure that the water will not get trapped and end up in your home in the event of heavy rainfall. DOORS & WINDOWS Check for leaks around your doors and windows, as this can lead to water entering the home if there are cracks in the foundation you didn't know about. LANDSCAPING Keep your shrubs and bushes trimmed away from the house, and don't store wood or compost piles near the foundation. ROOFING Keep your roof in good repair, and make sure that there aren't any missing shingles or cracks in the structure. The insurance company will expect that you keep your roof in good condition. FLOOD DRAINS If you have flood drains, make sure that they are in good working condition and work properly in case of an emergency. FOUNDATION CRACKS Check interior walls for cracks or crevices that your water could seep in through. Fix them accordingly and properly so water doesn't enter your home during a storm. BASEMENT STORAGE Move valuable items out of your basement incase of a flood. Removing electronics and valuables is very beneficial in the instance of a flood.
