Cyber bullying is a form of teen violence that can do lasting harm to young people. Cyber bullying can take many forms: Stealing a person's account information to break into their account and send damaging messages Sending mean Posting hurtful or threatening messages on social networking sites or web pages Spreading rumors online or through messages or threats to a person's email account or cell phone texts About 75% of students admit they have visited a website bashing another student. 81% of young people think bullying online is easier to get away with than bullying in person. Stats say: Bullying victims are 2 to 9 times more likely to consider committing suicide. 90% of teens who have seen social-media bullying say they have ignored it. 84% have seen others tell cyber bullies to stop. Girls are about twice as likely as boys to be victims and perpetrators of cyber buIlying. Only 1 in 10 victims will inform a parent or trusted adult of their abuse. According to Cyber bullying statistics from the i-S AFE foundation: Over half of adolescents and teens have been bullied online, and about the s ame number have engaged in cyber bullying. Over 25 percent of adolescents and teens have been bullied repeatedly through their cell phones or the Internet. More than 1 in 3 young people have experienced cyberthreats online. CYBER STALK ING What is Cyber Stalking? Simply put, Cyber Stalking is online stalking, the use of technology, particularly the lnternet, to haras s someone. More than 1 million women and 370,000 men are stalked annually in the United States. National figures show most stalkers to be male by overwhelming margins (87%) An astonishing 1 in 12 women and 1 in 45 men will be stalked in their lifetimes. National figures show victims of cyberstalking tend to be females during the college ages 18-29 But w vomen are not the only targets... A survey of 765 students at Rutgers University and the University of Pennsylvania found 45% of stalkers to be female and 56% to be male. Men represented over 40% of stalking victims in the Penn-Rutgers study. SEXTING What Is Sexting? Sexting (or "sex texting") is the sending or receiving of sexually explicit or sexually suggestive images, messages, or video via a cellphone or the Internet. Examples of sexting include sending: Nude or nearly nude photos or "selfies" Videos that sh ow nudity, sex acts, or simulated sex Text messages that propose sex or refer to sex a cts The Prevalence of Sending Sexts Among Young People 4% of cell-owning teens (ages 12-7) have sent a "sexually suggestive nude or nearly nude" photo or video of themselves. 4% 8% of 17-year-olds have sent one, compared to 4% of 12-year-olds 8% (Pew Internet survey).
