Moving Home Checklist We take you through the 8 weeks before you move hight Before 6 Weeks Before 2 Weeks Before 4 Weeks Before 8 WEEKS TO GO After you have accepted an offer on your home you need to: Organise onward accommodation - ensure you have a mortgage in principle and a solicitor in place. Gather quotes from removal firms If you have any valuable belongings, take them to an expert to assess the exact figure - for insurance. Declutter. Go through every room, clearing out what you don't need and don't want to take with you. Start collecting packing materials - boxes, newspaper, bags. Run down your food stores, gradually emptying the freezer and larder. 6 WEEKS TO GO When you have an approximate moving date to work around: If you are in rented accommodation, give notice to your landlord. Book storage space for any of your belongings, if needed. If you need any essential furniture in the new house, order it now to be delivered to your new address. Book time off work to move. Recruit help. Approach friends and family to help on the day, and see if you can leave young children and pets in safe hands, out of the way, on the move day itself. 4 WEEKS TOGO The contracts have now been exchanged and you have passed the point of no return. Confirm the moving date. Make a floor plan of the new home - colour code each room and stick coordinating stickers on each box so the removers know where they are going. Notify all relevant persons of the move: Contents Insurance Locksmith Council Tax Gas Water Solicitor Electricity Employer Internet Service Provider Phone Schools Benefits TV Licence Bank & Credit Cards DVLA 2 WEEKS TO GO Now it's time to dismantle your home. Start Packing! Notify friends & family of the move via address cards. Confirm Details with removal firm. Arrange time to collect keys from estate agent. Notify further persons of the move: Doctor Electoral Register Dentist Non Essential organisations - Charities, subscriptions, gym Post Deliveries NIGHT BEFORE Last minute Packing! Pack a bag for each family member containing their essentials - clothes, nightwear, toiletries, bed linen & towels. Organise a box for the kitchen with tea, coffee, milk, mugs, cutlery & kettle. Also takeaway menus, a bottle of bubbly & a corkscrew! Keep Cleaning materials and vacuum with you. Put together a mini-toolkit. Keep important numbers with you & a pen and paper. Charge mobile phones. Defrost the freezer. Put valuables & documents in a safe place. We hope you are now all set to move into your new home!
