British Homes Through the Ages

HOW BRITISH HOMES HAVE CHANGED 1950s - 2015 British life has changed dramatically over the past half century, and with it, so have our homes. Trends come and go, and the way we use space changes, too. Let's take a look at some of the decades' cultural and design highlights. • 50s The war is over! Britain celebrates: while homes are smaller, style trumps practicality for the first time in decades. Modernism-meets-kitsch is the theme of the time. I 60s Free love, flower power and pop music influence everything this decade: modernism is out, Art Nouveau is in. Groovy! • 70s The hippie movement trickles into homes, while bold, geometric prints abound. The recession keeps people in their homes, mending things over buying. • 80s Think sugary pastels, chintzy florals and preppy fabrics: no pattern or accessory is too much or too frivolous. Outside the home, it's all Lycra, perms and leg-warmers. 90s Pared-back design with elements of grunge is huge news this decade: white, double denim and Britpop galore. Minimalism clashes with the Spice Girls and Union Jacks. • 00s Reality TV and the launch of the iPod is central to many a British person's decade. The concept of celebrity influences culture, and design becomes much more individual. LOVE • 10s IPads, smartphones and technology revolutionises the way that we live our lives, share ideas and consume media. Design is clean, crisp and technical. Plumbs
