History of the Union Jack Flag The Union Jack, or Union Flag, is the national flag of the United Kingdom. The origins of the flag dateback to 1603. The current design combines three older national flags, the red cross for England & Wales along with the saltires of Scotland & Ireland. St. Andrew's Cross (Scotland) St. Patrick's Saltire (Ireland) Northern Ireland is represented by the cross of St. Patrick (a diagonal red cross on a white background) Scotland is represented by the flag of St. Andrew (a diagonal white cross (a saltire) on a blue background) St. George's Cross (England) England is represented by the flag of St. George (a red cross on a white background) Flag of Wales (Wales) Wales is a Principality, not of a Kingdom so it could not be included.
