THE SWEDISH EMIGRANTS 1850 Hard working Swedes were highly appreciated by most Americans in the 19th century. They thrived in this positive climate where labor was respected - a big contrast from the Aristocratic class snobbery in Sweden. Due to the heavy stream of emigrants, Sweden had to change. In 1920 they adapted a more American free way of living. THE JOURNEY BEGINS 14.860 The reasons to leave Sweden were many, although the main one was that America sold pieces of their land almost for free. DEATHS ON THE WAY It took roughly three months to reach the American shore, but onboard the ships sickness spread, and as a result, many people died. 1881 EMIGRATION CLIMAX 324.285 The word of a better new world had travelled across the Atlantic and everyone wanted a slice of American apple pie. Never have so many people left Sweden. 1890 TRAVELS EBBING OUT 54.506 Due to the rapid industrialization and the beginning of WWI, emigration shrunk to a mere trickle.
