Fashion - The Mirror of History

FASHION / THE MIRROR OF HISTORY The glamorous and fast paced world of fashion seems like something that could only exist in modern times. However, people have been expressing themselves through what they wear for centuries. THE BIRTH OF WESTERN FASHION 135Os Prior to the mid-14th century, clothes in the western world were primarily wom for practical purposes. 1. The tunic-style overgarment transformed into the tailored to p similar to today's style of shirt. 2. The durable hood transformed into the fashionable hat. 1400s TO 1600's Over these two centuries, men and women's fashions changed at such a rapid pace, that art historians could use fashion to properly date paintings. THE HNDUSTRIAL FASHION REVOLUTION With the dawning of modernity, the world was drastically changed through machines. The Industrial Revolution impacted the textile industry, forever changing fashion. BEFORE MID-18TH CENTURY most clothes were custom made. People would have to sew their clothes by hand, and this was a lengthy and ornate process. GREAT BRITAIN led the charge with mechanical innovations: Power Loom Spinning Frame Sewing Machine Steam-power version of the home loom. A device that quickened the thread spinning process. A device that greatly improved the process of sewing fabric together with thread. At one point, over 25% of Britain's exports were of clothing and related textiles. Because of the mechanization of clothing production, fashion trends began to shift in the 19th century. From then to present day, clothes have made the gradual progression toward fitting better, as advancements in technology allowed for mass production of well made clothing. FASHION IN PRINT Although fashion has been discussed in print for centuries, the birth of modem fashion journalism did not occur until the late 19th century. BAZAAR VOGUE Ilarpers Harper's Bazaar's first issue was pub- lished on November 2, 1867. Vogue, perhaps the most iconic fash- ion magazine of all time, did not print an issue until 1892. These magazines enhanced the fashion industry in many ways: They created a standard of fashion that would signify a wearer's status in society. They solidified the popularity of a worldwide fashion industry, and caused the significant declineof custom dressmaking. They promoted French couture in America.
