Trauma Can Happen Unexpectedly, but at lowa Methodist and Blank Children's, We are Prepared Accidents happen. It's a fact of life that many people try to ignore. When trauma happens, it's important to choose the best care for you and your children. Trauma Facts Trauma is injury to the body that occurs from an outside force. It could be caused by such events as a car crash, a bicycle crash, a fall or a gunshot wound. It is the number one cause of death in people between the ages of 1 and 44. Trauma ranks as the number four cause of death across all age groups. There are more than 400 deaths per day from trauma. Survival rates are higher when someone suffering from a traumatic injury goes to a Level I Trauma Center like lowa Methodist Medical Center or a Level 2 Pediatric Trauma Center like Blank Children's Hospital. Prevention is the only cure for trauma. Things YOU can do to prevent trauma include wearing your seat belt, wearing a helmet, never drinking and driving and never texting and driving. Around 317 million people are treated in emergency rooms because of an injury each year. Car Crashes In 2009, there were 10.8 million motor vehicle crashes. Violence Violence includes domestic violence, child abuse and shaken baby syndrome. Falls There were 2.4 million nonfatal older adult falls in 2012. Polsoning The rate of children dying from poisonings has doubled since 1999. Suffocation Suffocation is the number one cause of accidental injury death in children under the age of one. Traumatic Brain Injury Some common causes are falls, car accidents, sports injuries and combat injuries. Burns In the U.S. in 2010, someone was injured in a fire every 30 minutes. Drowning Ten people die from unintentional drowning every day. Two are children under the age of 14. It's your right to request the hospital you or your child want in the event of a traumatic accident or injury. The Level I Trauma Center at lowa Methodist Medical Center and the Level 2 Trauma Center at Blank Children's Hospital are the best choice for any and all traumatic events.
