Tekturna 2011: Novartis stopped its medical study, ALTITUDE, because Tekturna increased the risk of nonfatal stroke, kidney complications, hyperkalemia, and hypotension in patients with type-2 diabetes. The study included 8,606 patients from 36 countries. Novartis conducted the study in an effort to expand the uses of Tekturna because "product profitability in 2011 was negative." 2.4 million prescriptions for aliskiren products were administered to over 451,000 patients in the United States. Tekturna (aliskiren) is a once-daily pill used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension). It is the first renin inhibitor drug, which works by regulating the renin enzyme in the kidney. This regulation narrows the blood vessels and removes water from the bloodstream in order to improve circulation. In 2007, the FDA approved Tekturna for sale on the market by Novartis. By 2011, aliskiren products had been prescribed over 2.4 million times to over 451,000 patients in the United States. 2012: The FDA issued a warning to patients with kidney problems, diabetes, or who were taking angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors (ACEI) or angiotensin receptor blockers (ARB). The warnings were based on the ALTITUDE medical study, which found that aliskiren increased the risk of kidney impairment, low blood pressure, and high potassium levels. The study also showed an excess of heart attack and stroke cases. Novartis has marketed aliskiren in several forms: 100 Cases of Angioedema 1 Report of Death 2 Reports Life Threatening 15 Hospitalized 237 Adverse Event Reports Amturnide TekAmlo Tekturna TekturnaHCT Valturna Common side effects: Headache Rash Cough "more than any other blood pressure medication."
