The National High Traffic Safety Administration recorded 91,000 vehicle accidents in the US in 2017 caused by drowsy driving. If you feel tired or sleepy, don't drive, it may cost you your life. These tips will help you stay alert on the road. DON'T DRINK AND DRIVE It is illegal to drive when intoxicated by alcohol and it poses a danger to you, passengers, and other motorists on the road. Worse still is the pain and confusion that happens when an accident occurs. GET ENOUGH SLEEP You are more likely to doze off while driving if you don't get enough sleep. Healthy adults require 7-8 hours of sleep per day. People who sleep for fewer than 7 hours are at a higher risk of causing an accident. PULL OVER AND TAKE A BREAK If you feel sleepy, it is crucial to find a safe place to pull over and rest for a few minutes. Get out of the vehicle to catch fresh air and stretch, or get something to eat or drink. Take a 15 minute break every 2 hours to remain alert. DON'T DRIVE LONG DISTANCES ALONE Traveling with a family member or a friend is one of the best ways to prevent accidents. You will have a companion to talk with and keep you from drifting off.
