How plastic surgery has changed over the history

THE STORY OF PLASTIC SURGERY The word "plastic" in Plastic Surgery does not refer to the materials used in the procedure, it comes from the Greek πλαστική (τέχνη), plastike (tekhnē), “the art of modelling" of malleable flesh. It denotes sculpting or reshaping. 1 Early types of Plastic Surgery are mentioned in papyrus from ancient Egypt as old as 3,000 - 2,500 B.C. 2 3 By 800 B.C. Sushruta, an Indian physician was performing reconstructive surgery techniques that were the basis for 6th century plastic surgery. Romans performed plastic cosmetic surgery for repairing damaged ears, for example, around the 1st century B.C. The work of physicians as Aulus Cornelius Celsus was groundbreaking in the field of anatomy. 4 François Chopart was one of the first surgeons to transfer tissue from the neck to the lip in 1793. Others physicians followed him in Europe, like Joseph Carpue and Carl Ferdinand von Graefe. John Peter Mettauer, the first American plastic surgeon, performed the first cleft palate operation with instruments that he designed himself in 1827. 6 The New Zealander Sir Harold Gillies is 7 considered the father of modern plastic surgery, he was an otolaryngologist who developed a lot of techniques while taking care of soldiers fighting in World War I. The first person ever to receive modern plastic surgery was a sailor named Walter Yeo who was injured in the Battle of Jutland in 1917. 6. The first modern cosmetic plastic surgery was a rhinoplasty in 1923, followed by the first public face lift in 1931.
