The History of Blood Testing

The History of BLOOD TESTING The A, B andO blood types were AB+ identified in 1901 by Karl Landsteiner. This discovery allowed doctors to screen for compatible blood types prior to performing transfusions after 1907. In 1939, Landsteiner discovered blood Rh factor, allowing for safer transfusions. The Coombs test was introduced in 1945 to test for incomplete antibodies in the blood. In 1947, blood testing for syphilis was required prior to receiving a marriage license. Blood tests to check for hepatitis B were introduced in 1971. All donated blood began to be screened for HIV in 1985. Today, more than 10 tests are performed on all blood donations + received by the Red Cross to ensure safe transfusions.
