Healthier Marketing & Latino Kids

HEALTHIER MARKETING & LATINO KIDS EAT ME! THE BAD The food industry spends $2 billion per year marketing to kids. Latino kids are a top target of food marketers because of their %24 increasing population size, media exposure and spending power. EAT ME! DRINK ME! More than 82% of kid-focused food and drink ads on Spanish TV push unhealthy foods. Latino neighborhoods have nine times more outdoor ads for unhealthy foods and beverages than White neighborhoods. Industry self-regulation of marketing to kids is mixed... ...and policy regulation is limited. THE GOOD The food and beverage industry has begun some efforts to self-regulate ads to kids under age 12. Local communities have tools to regulate food and beverage marketing, including: menu labeling; prohibiting food sales in non-food retailers; prohibiting the sale and advertising of unhealthy foods on campus; and creating vending contracts that limit the sale and marketing of unhealthy food and drinks in parks or other active spaces.
