HEALTH IN HISPANIC AMERICAN SENIORS 2014 87% HISPANICS WILL DRIVE THE GROWTH IN AMERICA'S SENIOR POPULATION, WHICH IS EXPECTED TO DOUBLE IN THE NEXT HISPANICS REPRESENT 7% OF THE OLDER POPULATION, A NUMBER THAT IS PROJECTED TO INCREASE TO 20% BY 2050. 51% 25 f ll 70% 7% 2014 THE PERCENT OF OLDER HISPANICS LIVING WITH RELATIVES IS ALMOST DOUBLE THAT OF THE GENERAL SENIOR POPULATION, WHICH OFFERS THEM EMOTIONAL SUPPORT. 51% OF THE HISPANIC SENIOR POPULATION HAS COMPLETED HIGH SCHOOL COMPARED TO 87% OF NON-HISPANIC WHITES, WHICH POSITIONS THE HISPANIC POPULATION TO BE AT A MUCH HIGHER RISK OF CHRONIC ILLNESS AS WELL AS ECONOMIC INSTABILITY AS IT AGES. 20% OF HISPANIC SENIORS ARE ECONOMICALLY VULNERABLE. 2050 HISPANICS 65 YEARS OF AGE OR OLDER |30% 35% OF STATES WITH LARGE HISPANIC POPULATIONS, THE SENIORS POPULATION IN ARIZONA, NEVADA, TEXAS AND FLORIDA ARE EXPECTED TO INCREASE THE MOST IN THE NEXT 15 YEARS. 77% 25% 30% NV NON-HISPANICS WHITES 65 YEARS OF AGE OR OLDER AZ 57% TX FL OBESE PHYSICALLY INACTIVE "POOR", "FAIR", OR "GOOD" HEALTH STATUS AMONG THE 10 STATES WITH THE HIGHEST HISPANIC POPULATION: NEVADA'S SUICIDE RATE IS THE HIGHEST IN THE NATION AT 32 DEATHS PER 100.000 ADULTS AGED 65 AND OLDER COLORADO RANKS FIRST IN COLLEGE EDUCATION AMONG SENIORS NEW JERSEY RANKS IN THE BOTTOM FIVE STATES FOR HOSPITAL DEATHS NEW YORK HAS ONE OF THE LOWEST RATES OF HOSPICE USE AMONG SENIORS CALIFORNIA SCORES HIGHEST FOR HEALTH BEHAVIORS COMBINED, SHOWING LOW RATES OF SMOKING, OBESITY, AND PHYSICAL INACTIVITY.
