COVID-19 and Its Prevention • What is COVID-19? COVID-19 or coronavirus disease is a highly infectious disease caused by Severe Acute Respira- tory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-COV-2). The new virus was not known to infect humans before the outbreak began in Wuhan, China, in December 2019. COVID-19 has infected mil- lions of people across the globe and has caused thousands of deaths. • What Happens When You Get the Coronavirus Disease? People with COVID-19 generally develop signs and symptoms, including respiratory distress, dry cough, fever, muscle pain, about 5-6 days after infection. In children, the disease may express itself with skin rashes, nausea, and diarrhea. • How Does COVID-19 Spread? COVID-19 is mainly transmitted through droplets generated when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or speaks. The droplets can land on another person's eyes, nose, mouth, or can be breathed in or a healthy person can touch them on a surface on which they are still live. • What are the Symptoms of COVID-19? Dry Cough Fever Shortness of Breath Some people may experience: Aches & Pains Sore Throat Nasal Congestion Diarrhea Runny Nose • Steps to Prevent the Spread of COVID-19 1. Clean your hands regularly. Use soap and water, or a sanitizer with over 65% alcohol content. 2. Maintain a safe distance from anyone who is coughing or sneezing. 3. Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. 4. Stay home if you feel unwell. Use a mask in public places. 5. If you have fever, cough, or difficulty in breathing, seek medical attention. • COVID-19 Treatments Currently, there are no specific vaccines or medicines to prevent or treat COVID-19. Some potential vaccine candidates have entered the initial and advanced stages of clinical trials, however, their efficacy and safety for human use are not yet determined. FreeLIMS
