Could starving a heart make it resistant to damage?

COULD "STARVING" A HEART MAKE IT RESISTANT TO DAMAGE? Every day, your heart beats 100,000 times, pumping 2,000 gallons of blood through 60,000 miles of blood vessels that feed your organs and tissues. Over your lifetime, your heart will pump about 1 million barrels of blood - enough to fill more than 3 super tankers. It turns out that "starving." or maintaining balanced nutrition while being in a calorie deficit, may help your heart out during periods of extreme stress and keep heart cells working together to keep the entire heart beating, according to scientists at The Methodist DeBakey Heart & Vascular Center in Houston, Texas. So, why would you want to starve such a vital organ? How did these scientists figure this out? 3. Singled out one group for 24 hours: 1. They took cells from: 2. Raised those cells for 2-to-3 days in this: THE "HEART This group was "starved" or subjected to a much lower level of nutrients than the main glucose group. A simple sugar our bodies use to fuel things like this: 4. Then, limited the following in both groups: & NUT ENTS OXYGEN 5. What did the scientists discover? The "starved" cells lived 8 minutes longer, on average, than cells that had plenty of nutrients. And the starved cells continued to work normally, even without oxygen and food. The findings suggest systems that help cells survive periods of stress also can make the whole heart - and you - more likely to survive heart attacks and other damaging events. This simulates cardiac problems like a heart attack.
