Step 1: Eat Healthy • Eat more fruits, veggies, whole grains, and fat-free dairy. • Look for monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats. • Reduce your salt, partially hydrogenated oils and added sugars. • Focus on making home cooked meals for your family. Step 2: Quit Smoking • Your risk of developing heart disease will be greatly reduced. • Your blood pressure and heart rate will fall to normal levels. Step 3: Manage Stress • Find someone to talk to about your problems. • Stay social with your friends and family. • Get enough sleep. • Treat yourself to something nice as a break. Step 4: Exercise • Your risk of developing coronary heart disease will be reduced. • Your risk of high blood pressure and high cholesterol will also be reduced. • Try walking, biking, climbing stairs, or dancing. Step 5: Maintain a Healthy Weight • Diets don't work. • Excess weight puts stress on the heart. • Focus on living a healthy lifestyle. • Your risk of stroke, heart disease, diabetes and high blood pressure will be reduced.
