10 QUESTIONS TO ASK BEFORE GASTRIC BYPASS 1. What Are the Eligibility Criteria for Gastric Bypass? 40+ • BMI of 40+ or 100 Ibs. overweight • Or BMI of 35+ with 1-2 obesity-related conditions • Unable to achieve/sustain adequate weight loss through diet and exercise BMI 2. What Happens During Gastric Bypass Surgery? A small pouch is created at the top of the stomach The proximal jejunum is attached to the pouch Fewer calories are absorbed, as food bypasses most of the stomach and small intestines 3. Do I Have to Change My Diet Before Surgery? You will replace some of your meals with protein shakes Immediately prior to surgery, you will be on a liquid diet Meals must be high-protein and low in carbs and fat 4. How Else Should I Prepare for Surgery? Have all required pre-op lab tests and exams Stop smoking 8 weeks before your surgery date Set up your home for recovery and find a caretaker 5. What Should I Pack for the Hospital? Medication list with dosages Overnight bag with comfortable clothes, toiletries, and phone charger Journal provided by your surgeon 6. What Happens After Surgery in the Hospital? You will stay in a post-surgical unit while the anesthesia wears off You will be transferred to a room where you'll recover for 1-3 days You will be on a liquid diet and do exercises to reduce the risk of clots 7. How Do I Recover at Home? Have a caregiver to help you for the first few days Expect to feel run down for at least 2 weeks Call your doctor if you have signs of infection 8. What Do I Eat Post-Surgery? • Liquid diet on days 1-14 • Pureed foods on days 15-3O • Soft foods on days 31-45 • Normal foods on days 46+ • Avoid high-sugar, high-fat, and high-carb foods 9. When Can I Return to Work? Work return times vary between patients Expect to need at least 5-15 days off Physically demanding jobs are more difficult to return to 10.
