What Happens During Gastric Bypass Surgery? Do I Have to Change My Diet Before Surgery? You will replace some of your meals with protein shakes Immediately prior to surgery, you will be on a liquid diet Meals must be high-protein and low in carbs and fat 4. How Else Should I Prepare for Surgery? Have all required pre-op lab tests and exams Stop smoking 8 weeks before your surgery date Set up your home for recovery and find a caretaker 5.
