Aftermath of earthquakes in Japan One of the worst earthquakes occurred off Japan's Miyagi Prefecture, 373 km north-east of Tokyo. RUSSIA Four nuclear power plants suspend operation (Fukushima I had explosions at two of its six power generation units) The earthquake and a series of after- shocks and tsunamis have destroyed or partly destroyed 63,200 buildings (according to the country's fire services).
