USA - MONOPOLY - Elizabeth Magie created Monopoly in 1903-then called the Landlord's Game. - Magie intended it as a way to teach people about the unfairness of economist Henry George's single tax theory. - The game is currently available in 111 different countries and 43 different languages. - Each box includes at least $15,140. - There is at least $4,163,500,000,000 of Monopoly money in circulation. FRANCE - SUDOKU - Paris newspaper Le Siècle published a partially completed 9x9 “magic square" with 3x3 sub-squares on November 19, 1892. - Adapted into its present format in Japan's Monthly Nikolist in 1984. -Received its name from a shortening of Sūji wa dokushin ni kagiru ( aE3). - The Times published its first Sudoku in 2004. - Pencil sales increased 700% in the year following Sudoku's becoming popular. ITALY - BINGO/TOMBOLA -Bingo is believed to have originated in 15th Century Italy. - In the 50s and 60s, Bingo halls became a place where women could freely socialise without having to be accompanied by a man (as was the custom in most public places). -The freedom to mix this way is believed to have inspired many of the feminist movements in Britain during the 60s. 4. GERMANY - CHINESE CHECKERS - Chinese Checkers was invented in Germany in 1892 under the name "Stern-Halma" - The name Chinese Checkers came about as a marketing ploy by American game producers the Pressman Company, to help sell more of the game in the US. 5. INDIA - SNAKES AND LADDERS - Known originally as The Ladder of Salvation, Snakes and Ladders is the product of a series of dice games that came out of ancient India. - Snakes and Ladders originally promoted the traditional Hindu beliefs of Karma and Kama. - Ladders are metaphors for good deeds and snakes, bad deeds-the goal being Salvation. - Was renamed Chutes and Ladders, by US game producer Milton Bradley, in 1943.Milton Bradley, in 1943. 6. GHANA - JENGA - Jenga was created by Leslie Scott and her family whilst visiting Ghana in the 70s. - Marketed originally at the 1983 Toy fair in London, and was being distributed worldwide by 1985. - The game gained some controversy when it was claimed that the game had not been invented by Scott, and had rather been invented in 1978 by the Parsons family, who named it Ta-Ka-Radi - Takoradi was the name of the village Leslie Scott had bought her blocks. - The name Jenga is derived from a Swahili word that means 'to build'. 7. RUSSIA - TETRIS - Tetris was created in the early 1980s by Alexey Pajitnov, Dmitry Pavlovsky, and Vadim Gerasimov in the Soviet Union. - The game belonged to the state, and the three never received royalties until after the fall of the Soviet Union.
