GAMING DEVELOPERS A Growing Mobile Industry GREAT MOMENTS IN VIDEO GAMES 1972 The Magnavox Odyssey becomes the world's first commercial home video game console. It was first demonstrated in April 1972 and released in August of that year. 1977 The Atari 2600 is released in October 1977 by Atari, Inc. It's credited with popularizing the use of microprocessorbased hardware and cartridges containing game code. 1980 Namco releases Pac-Man which instantly becomes a video game classic and an icon of 1980s popular culture. 1985 The Nintendo Entertainment System helped revitalize the US video game industry following the video game crash of 1983, and set the standard for subsequent consoles of its generation. 1998 Snake becames the standard pre-loaded game on Nokia phones in 1998, helping to pave the way for other mobile phone games. 2000 The PlayStation 2 is released, eventally becoming the the best-selling console of all time, having reached over 154.4 million units sold as of November 21, 2011. 2011 Angry Birds becomes the most downloaded mobile app of 2011, rounding out the list of top 10 apps of the year ahead of Facebook, Twitter and Fruit Ninja.
