How to Perform Coffee Chemistry in Your Kitchen

PERFORM COFFEE CHEMISTRY IN YOUR KITCHEN! C, HN, 0, (CAFFEINE) THE CAFETIERE CAF Designed in Italy in 1929, The "French Press" is the classic way to have the best coffee in your kitchen. The perfect French Press coffee should have a four minute brewing time. THE SCIENCE The Cafetiere works simply: it uses a mesh wire filter which presses the grounds down and keeps your coffee clean after a four minute brew. AEROPRESS AE Invented in 2005, the Aeropress essentially works like a giant syringe! Using two plastic tubes, the Aeropress pushes fine ground coffee through a microfilter. This leads to a speedy 30 second brewing time and a heady coffee - a mug of Aeropress coffee is just as strong as an espresso! THE SCIENCE The Aeropress uses air pressure in order to extract the flavour from the ground beans for a strong brew. 2 CHEMEX CH This flask-like device wouldn't look out of place in a laboratory. Invented in 1941 by Peter Schlumbohm, the Chemex's slow 'drip' brew process allows for the harmful elements of coffee oils to be removed from the brew. THE SCIENCE The Chemex uses patented chemically bonded filters to create a clean cup of coffee free from bitterness. VACUUM COFFEE MAKER VA Invented in the l1830s, the vacuum coffee maker fell out of fashion after the Victorian era, but is slowly making a comeback. The brew is around 10 minutes, and is brilliantly dramatic and complex. THE SCIENCE This incredible machine has two globes, the lower filled with water and the upper globe containing the grounds. The lower globe is heated, and the water vapour is sucked up into the grounds in the upper globe. After the brewing process is over, the heat is turned off and the brew falls back into the lower globe. SOFTBREW SO The newest way to make coffee in the home, the SoftBrew was invented in 2010 by the Sowden company. Working like the popular French press, the SoftBrew claims to make a cleaner and fresher brew in the simplest way (you don't even have to 'press' anything!) THE SCIENCE Using a microfilter with 160,000 holes, the SoftBrew method means that only the finest of grounds will pass through into your coffee, guaranteeing a smooth brew. presented by Loveabode
