Below we have detailed some basic food safety facts. 1 Did you know that on average the kitchen sink contains 100,000 times more germs that a bathroom or toilet. The average chopping board in your kitchen contains approximately 200% more bacteria than the average toilet seat. It is advised that you have multiple chopping boards so you can differentiate between food types. Placing hot food in the fridge to cool down can lead to food poisoning. The middle of the food remains hot for a longer period than the outside creating a perfect environment for bacteria to multiply. Food is actually okay to eat after the best before date. Best before dates simply relate to food quality not safety. Use by dates on the other hand are there to indicate when the food is safe to eat. 5 You should never wash a raw chicken, the droplets from washing can reach up to 70cm away meaning any objects in the surrounding area can be contaminated by harmful bacteria. Studies have found that kitchen sponges contain the most germs in the house. A good tip for getting rid of these germs is to boil the kitchen sponges once a week. Dishuashing Tiquid Eggs are one of the main causes of food illnesses. Eggs should always be refrigerated as keeping them at room temperature allows the salmonella to multiply.
