DEADLIEST EVER FOOD DISASTERS The Boston Molasses Disaster 2:50pm, 15th Jan 1919 Purity Distilling Co, North End District, Boston MA, USA 8.7 MILLION LITRES! A Hot, Sticky Mess One unseasonably warm Boston morning, a huge vat of dormant molasses started to ferment rapidly and expand. The poorly constructed vats had been overloaded in an attempt to outpace incoming prohibition laws. The strain tore them apart, sending a destructive 40 foot wave of molasses speeding across the harbour. An unseasonably warm d... ay caused a giant vat of molasses to ferment and subsequently expand. 8.7 million litres of molasses eventually burst free from the vat and a 40ft wave was unleashed on the city. There was serious property damage and as many as 21 people lost their lives to the incident. Residents would say that in the following months and even years, you could still smell the molasses on a hot day.
