DEADLIEST EVER FOOD DISASTERS The Boston Molasses Disaster 2:50pm, 15th Jan 1919 Purity Distilling Co, North End District, Boston MA, USA 8.7 MILLION LITRES! A Hot, Sticky Mess One unseasonably warm Boston morning, a huge vat of dormant molasses started to ferment rapidly and expand. The poorly constructed vats had been overloaded in an attempt to outpace incoming prohibition laws. The strain tore them apart, sending a destructive 40 foot wave of molasses speeding across the harbour.
