Alternative Christmas Foods: Mopane Worms
Mopane Worms (Southern Africa) Originally seen as a necessity rather than eaten for pleasure, the "worms" (which are actually caterpillars) are an important protein source at a time of year when food is scarce. It just so happens that they're harvested around Christmas, becoming part of the festivities over the years and many now regard them as a delicacy.

Take a trip around the world and learn about some alternative Christmas food traditions from different corners of the globe. For this one, we're headed to South Africa. The Mopane worm (which are actu...
ally caterpillars) is harvested every year around the same time as Christmas. This means that eating mopane worms has become a de facto festive tradition. Mopane worms are a great source of protein and food at times when food is scarce as it is during the winter months. Insects are a common delicacy around the world, that might sound gross to you but equally is it any more gross than eating mouldy cheese as so many do?
