Water-related disaster resilience index / Fatalities per 1,000 population ------
Bangladesh is vulnerable to water-related hazards due to the exposure of its densely populated coastlines to frequent ...
floods, storm surges, and rising sea levels. Several island countries in the Pacific also have low resilience, resulting from a lack of adequate infrastructure, governance, and social organization to prevent, respond to, and recover from extreme events. Each of these countries has high fatality rates when water-related disasters occur (Figure 19). The countries with the highest rates of water-related fatalities, notably Bangladesh, Nepal, the Philippines, Tajikistan, and Vanuatu, should be encouraged to increase investments in disaster risk reduction. Increased community-based disaster risk management is likely to be a cost-effective measure to make communities more resilient and to reduce fatalities.
