Shifting the winds in your favor

Shifting the winds in your favor To help manage wind's variability, GE has introduced the world's first "brilliant" wind turbine with integrated energy storage. Using a little bit of storage and advanced forecasting algorithms, GE is helping make wind power predictable, flexible and fast responding. How do they do it? Imagine three wind-shifting scenarios When winds gust When wind gusts ramp up quickly, power can be wasted if the grid cannot absorb it all, With GE's Ramp Control Application, this extra wind power can be captured and stored short term in the battery for use by operators when the grid needs it later. When wind speed seesaws Wind speeds vary by small amounts all the time, affecting how much power the wind turbines produce. GE's Predictable Power Application allows wind farm operators to forecast their energy output in 15-60 minute intervals as wind speeds change. Think of it as cruise control for your wind turbine. When power demand is in flux Energy needs constantly fluctuate as consumers plug and unplug throughout the day. GE's Frequency Regulation Application allows turbines to respond to fluctuating demand with total precision, which results in additional revenue for wind farm operators. With brilliant wind turbines, brains and brawn combine to enable the strongest and most collaborative wind fleet on Earth. Find out more by visiting http://www.ge-energy.com/wind/battery

Wind turbines and wind energy rock. But the wind isn’t always steady and demand for power isn’t either, so most wind turbines without energy storage don’t respond well to big changes and fluctua...
