Plastic straws are the 7th most collected items on beaches. It’s said that 8 million tons of plastic find it’s way into our oceans every year. And only about 90% of the stuff we use every gets rec...
ycled.
Plastic straws are the ultimate convenience. Sucking our soda and cocktails up through these single-use tools for modern life is arguably a luxury we can do without. The problem with plastic straws is that because of their lightweight they easily blow out of bins or landfill. From here they often make their way into our Oceans.
And it's not just about making our beaches unsightly. Plastic straws don’t biodegrade. Rather they break down into smaller particle called microplastics. These microplastics are then consumed by marine life and can even make their way back to us through the food chain.
The good news is that the landscape is changing with plastic straw bans forthcoming and companies moving to alternatives. Each and every straw that we prevent making its way into the Oceans has to be a good thing.
Plastic straws, whereas only a small part of the overall problem, are something that each of us can act on and reduce.
Say no to plastic straws by asking for non plastic straws when eating our and considering eco-friendly plastic straw alternatives.
