Key Dimension 1 Household Water Security To satisfy household water supply and sanitation needs in all communities Household water security is essential to eradicate poverty. The poorest households in Asia have been left behind, according to results of the AWDO 2013 household water security index. The richest households have benafited most from investments to increase access to safe drinking water and sanitation. South Asia and Failure to overcome the inertia in sanitation the Pacific investments will cancel out the benefits from increased access to safe drinking water. These are hot spots with lowest coverage in piped water supply and improved sanitation. The region needs $59 billion in investments for water supply and $71 billion for improved sanitation. Inequity in access is highest in South Asia. Actions to be Taken Integrate financing for water and sanitation into national accounts and planning. Each dollar invested in water and sanitation is likely to return $5-$46 in reduced health care costs and increased economic productivity. Vision Give agencies and service providers the autonomy and resources (financial and technical) to succeed, with accountability. Societies can enjoy household water security when they successfully manage their water resources and services to satisfy household water and sanitation needs in all communities. Double the current rates of investment in sanitation. Just $25 per person will finance basic access to safe drinking water and improved sanitation and hygiene.
