This year you will most likely use 229 kg (or 504 pounds) of paper - that is equivalent to nearly 1500 copies of a medium newspaper. This paper can be magazines, packaging, tissues, paper towels, boo... ks, notepads or copy paper - any kind of paper. North Americans still consume more paper than anyone else on earth. Even with the internet replacing paper causing a per capita decrease, total world paper consumption is on the rise, because there are more people. That much paper works out to be about six trees per person per year. Two thirds will get recycled. One third will end up in landfill. Or course this is a pretty general figure because no two trees are the same. Now this might not sound tragically enormous, but trees are pretty big and by 320 million people that works out to nearly 2 billion trees - that's a lot of land to clear every year, even if it is a plantation - and trees take over 20 years to grow to size. When people think of paper, they usually think trees. But 'trees' are arguably the least of paper's environment troubles. Paper production is the third most energy-intensive of all manufacturing industries, using over 12 percent of all energy in the industrial sector. The paper and pulp industry is also the fourth largest emitter of greenhouse gases in the manufacturing sector. Most of this paper often just for a single use before it's thrown away.
