LAND BASED CASINOSë CASINO IN THE UNITED STATES "In modern English, a casino is a facility which houses and accommodates certain types of gambling activities. The industry that deals in casinos is called the gaming industry. Casinos are most commonly built near or combined with hotels, restaurants, retail shopping, cruise ships or other tourist attractions." GAMBLING HISTORY 1931 Nevada legalize casino gaming. The Flamingo, opens in Las Vegas. 1947 Harrah's Entertainment becomes the first 1973 "pure casino" company to be traded on the New York Stock Exchange. New Jersey becomes the second state to legalize casino gaming. 1976 The first casino opens in Atlantic City, N.J. 1978 The Mirage Hotel & Casino Resort opens in Las Vegas, ushering in the era of the destination casino resort. 1989 South Dakota and lowa legalize gaming. ra 8l ol aE ol el aa0 The commercial casino industry creates 1995 the American Gaming Association (AGA) MGM MIRAGE acquires Mandalay Resort Group in April AMERICAN GAMING ASSOCIATION Harrah's Entertainment, Inc. acquires 2005 Caesars Entertainment in June. Gross gaming revenues in the United States top $30 billion for the first time. The first racetrack casinos open in Florida and Pennsylvania, bringing the total number of states with racinos to 11. 2006 Voters in Ohio approve a constitutional amendment that would bring a casino to each of four cities - Cincinnati, Cleveland, Columbus and Toledo. 2009 Kansas opens the first state-owned casino resort - Boot Hill Casino & Resort in Dodge City, Kan. Table game operations begin in Delaware and Pennsylvania - two states that up to that point had allowed only slot machines in casinos. 2010 The first casino opens in Maryland. The first casino opens in Ohio. 2012 Global Gaming Women to Launch Groundbreaking Online Mentoring Program. 2013 2014 American Gaming Association Announces New Partnership with the American Bus Association to Promote Safety.
