“Hoarding: Buried Alive” is a TV series that tells the story of individuals in a documentary style. It highlights the lives of people who have the compulsion to keep things, called hoarding. This...
documentary attempts to see the personal experiences of the hoarders through their eyes, the impact it has on the family members as well as the person suffering from hoarding itself. “Hoarding: Buried Alive” would like to make a difference among individuals suffering from such condition by helping them overcome and manage their mental illness.
“Hoarding: Buried Alive” generally features two individuals every episode and tries to understand the etiology of their condition and the factors that contributed to its development. In addition, the TV show tries to uncover the impact that the condition has on the sufferer as well as their family. The TV show also tries to classify the type of hoarder by their subjects for the episode to better address the condition. For the sake of the general public, there are mainly 5 categories of hoarders: knowledge hoarder, food hoarder, shopping hoarder, the animal hoarder and the obscure items hoarder.
Based on the assessment done on each individual patient, they are given interventions appropriate for their illness by expert therapist and organizers.
Rehabilitation programs have been quite popular on television at the turn of the 21st century. However, debates have been raging regarding its effectiveness in treating individuals suffering from such mental illness. The televised nature could somehow affect the outcome since the subject might withhold some details about the psychology of their illness. The subject might also exaggerate the extent of their illness for reasons we can only speculate on.
“Hoarding: Buried Alive” attempts to explain the illness to televiewers so that the hoarding sufferers will be understood and remove the social stigma attach to it.
This series was received with mixed reviews from critics. IMDB gave it a positive review of 6.5 out of 10 stars. To some people, this show is an eye-opener about real issues that matter in American society and deserve attention. On one hand, critics say this is a form of exploitation and the show is not an accurate depiction of the hoarding sufferers. Children might get a bad impression when watching the show.
