THE LIFE RAY CHARLES - OF - LEGENDARY MUSICIAN & OVERCOMER 1930 On Sept. 23rd, Ray Charles is born in Albany, Georgia, and was later raised in Greenville, Florida 1935 5. His younger brother dies in a drowning accident when Charles turns 5. 1937 After progressively worsening eyesight, Charles loses all vision by age 7. GA FL 1937 Charles learns to read, write, and play music at St. Augustine's School for the Deaf and Blind. 1945 1945 Charles leaves school and His mother dies, leaving Charles an orphan at age 15. performs as a musician in Jacksonville, Florida. Seattle, WA In 1948 WA 1948 Charles starts using heroin. Moves to Seattle and joins the McSon Trio band. 1952 + TLANTIC Los Angeles, CA Signs on with Atlantic Records, marking the real launch of his СА 1950 career. Moves to Los Angeles after "Confession Blues" becomes a hit. 1959 Joins ABC- Paramount Records. 1979 "Georgia on My Mind" named official state song of Georgia. "Just an Dfd Sweet Song 1965 Keeps Georgia my Mind." Gets arrested for heroin possession and starts drug rehab. 2004 on Dies at age 73 at his Beverly Hills home. 2004 Movie "Ray" released about Charles' life. 1987 Wins Grammy award for Lifetime Achievement.
