PAINTING AND PHOTOGRAPHY: WHAT YOU PROBABLY DIDNT KNOW ABOUT FAMOUS ART 183 E PHOTOGRAPHY: IS IT ART? •.. Since the first photographs were taken centuries ago, it has always been debated whether or not it is a form of art. Some argue that photography does not "elevate the imagination" and that it is simply a mechanical recording medium. That was until 2011, when a photograph taken by German visual artist, Andreas Gursky, was auctioned for $4.3 million, making it the most expensive photograph ever sold. The debate was effectively over. Rhein II Material C-print mounted to acrylic glass 190 cm x 360 cm (73 in x 143 in) Dimensions Year 1999 Owner Anonymous PHOTOGRAPHY CONDEMNED Back in the 1800's an artwork is supposed to extol - in the service of God or king... but with the advent of early photography (Daguerreotypy), it was gradually overlaid by a desire to communicate. Photography was charged with commercialism, industrialism, and the banality of reproducing ordinary life in all its ugliness. It was treated with such disgust that no one probably thought they can co-exist. PHOTOGRAPHY ACKNOWLEDGED The evolution of photography and photographic camera happened in nearly the same period as Impressionism in the 19th century. Impressionists were the first ones (maybe not all of them) to take advantage of photography as basis for their paintings. In 1869, French painter Gustave Courbet, used photography's ability to capture the fleeting moment of an ocean wave to create his masterpiece, "The Wave". SOME FAMOUS IMPRESSIONISTS Vincent van Gogh Toulouse Lautrec Paul Cezanne Paul Gauguin Edgar Degas Alphonse Mucha Pablo Picasso THE PHOTOGRAPHY/PAINTING CONTROVERSY Like the Impressionists then, some artists today use photographs in creating their paintings. Only this is not always an acceptable practice. There is a general expectation that artists are pulling from their own imaginations or even live models but not photographs. Some artists deny ever using photographs; some think they are not breaking any rules, arguing that even before photography, artists used the camera obscura. CAMERA OBSCURA It's an ancient optical device. It is a dark room (or box) with a small hole in one wall. Light from an external scene passes through the hole and strikes a surface inside, where it is reproduced and rotated upside-down. The image can be projected on any surface like paper or canvas, and can then be traced to produce a highly accurate representation. PAINTING PHOTOGRAPHS A GROWING INDUSTRY No matter how quality a photograph is, there's just something beautiful and timeless about paintings. For mostly sentimental reasons, people are beginning to appreciate painted photographs as another way of expressing affection. Now we can look at paintings and appreciate not just the genius behind it, but also the memories they immortalize.
