For Nelson Mandela, the leader of the anti- apartheid movement and South Africa's first black president, music was a powerful force. As the world celebrates his remarkable life, we take a look at his extraordinary past and the way in which he used music as a means to encourage change and inspire hope. By 1961, all are acquitted. "When a man is denied the right to live the life he believes in, he has no choice but to become an outlaw" 1956 Sixty-nine people protesting against apartheid laws are shot and killed by police in the Sharpeville massacre. "The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear" Later that year, the ANC (African National Congress) is banned, a state of emergency imposed and Mandela is among thousands detained. "I am not a saint, unless you think of a saint as a sinner who keeps on trying" 1960 After being on the run for 17 months, Mandela is charged with IANC sabotage and attempting to violently overthrow the government. He is sentenced to life imprisonment on Robben Island. "I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it" 1964 NELSON MANDELA After 18 years on Robben Island, Mandela is moved to Pollsmoor Prison. According to former inmates, Mandela would give concerts in prison cells to lift prisoners spirits. "To be free is not merely to cast off one's chains, but to live in a way that respects and enhances the freedom of others" 1989 Following international outcry, Nelson Mandela is released from prison. He strongly believes that political songs sang in his honour led to his release. "It always seems impossible until it's done" On his first visit to Britain after 27 years in jail, Mandela's first appearance was at an enormous televised concert held in his honour. It is watched by hundreds of millions around the world. "Sometimes it falls upon a generation to be great, you can be that generation" 1990 Inaugurated as President of South Africa. "A winner is a dreamer who never gives up" 1994 Following his divorce from Winnie in '96, Mandela marries Graça Machel on his 80th birthday. "I am blooming like a flower, because of the love and support she has given me" 1998 Mandela steps down as president. "I was not a messiah, but an ordinary man who had become a leader because of extraordinary circumstances" 1999 Music for Mandela, a film which explores the significant role music has played in his life, begins filming.
