myspace A Year in Movies: WHAT HAPPENED IN 2010? Who had a GOOD year in 2010? BOX OFFICE WINNERS (based on worldwide gross) I WORLDWIDE GROSS 2010 MOVIE TICKET SALES NORTH AMERICA GROSS TICKETS SOLD: 1.32 billion REVENUE: $10.32 billion This year was the first time in history that two films grossed more than $I billion at the box office in the same year. TOY STORY 3 STUDIO(S) STUKY ANIMATED FILMS The industry's one saving grace this year was smart animated films released by giants such as Pixar and Dreamworks. Not surprisingly, well-loved Toy Story 3 leads the pack with almost $415 million PIXAR PIOTURE' $1,063,063,790 $414,984,497 domestic box office bucks. ALICE IN WONDERLAND @লকি PICTURES $1,024,299,722 MOVIES MAKE $334,191,110 FACEBOOK SEXY Despite the fact that everyone thought it'd be a bunch of dudes sitting around a computer, "The Social Network" was one of the most buzzed about movies of the year. Who would have thought a movie about a social network starring Justin Timberlake, might be up for an Oscar? INCEPTION $823,368,082 $292.285,843 SHREK FOREVER AFTER jackass DRIAMWORKS ANISLATON SKG $737,424,296 $238,395,990 3-D & IMAX Helped by popular animated films, there were at least a dozen major 3-D releases in theaters this past summer. Who cares if you look silly coming out of the screening with giant glasses on? Heck - even Jackass did it and it was great. THE TWILIGHT SAGA: ECLIPSE light SUMMIT INTERTAINMENI $692,372,015 $300,531,751 IRON MAN 2 MOODY TEENAGE VAMPIRES AVIACOM COMPANY The wildly popular Twilight Saga, with its soap opera storylines and pale, emotionally delicate heroes, has successfully bewitched young moviegoers everywhere. The Twilight Saga: Eclipse has already grossed close to $700 million worldwide. $621,751,988 $312,128,345 HARRY POTTER & THE DEATHLY HALLOWS: PART 1 $604,395,291 $221,395,291 DESPICABLE ME STEVE CARELL UNIVERSAL The comedian, who was involved in three films- "Date Night", "Dinner with Schmucks", "Despicable Me"- came home with generous paychecks this year. $534,640,645 $249,740,645 HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON DGON TOWN DREAMWORKS ANIATWAR $493,202,818 THE TOWN $217,581,231 Every year, there's a sleeper hit that enters the scene with little more than a fresh idea and word of mouth, but somehow manages to become a success. Think: "Amelie" or “Juno". The heist flick,"The Town" may have run away with it this time around. CLASH OF THE TITANS $493,214,993 $163,214,888 Who had a BAD year in 2010? ACTION HEROES: MISSING COMIC BOOK COMEDIES IN ACTION ADAPTATIONS Being funny may not be that hard but this year's crowd was especially tough. Comedic films like "Get Him to the Greek", “MacGruber" and "Dinner for Schmucks" all earned a paltry amount in theaters. In the search for a new action hero star, Hollywood has audi- tioned everyone from Jake Gyllenhaal (“Prince of Persia") to Adrien Brody ("Predators") but have yet to come up with a worthy replacement to seats left vacant by Schwarzenegger, Stallone and Van Damme. 2010 has been a roller coaster year for films that comic fanboys may have applauded, but everyone else hated. Some did well (Iron Ma 2) and some were plain pathetic (Jonah Hex made less than a quarter of its modest $47 million budget).
