Where Are We Now: Looking at "A Nation at Risk," 30 years later

Where Are Nation at RISK We Now? 30 YEARS LATER 1870-2009 Nation at Risk, released 30 years ago, declared that "the educational foundations of our society are presently being eroded by a rising tide of mediocrity that threatens our very future as a nation and a people." To mark the anniversary of this landmark report, here is a look at comparative data on selected aspects of American education over the decades since the report, highlighting academic, demographic, and other trends. SOURCES: U.S. Department of Commerce; Census Bureau COURSETAKING TRENDS Rigorous Midlevel According to the NCES, high school graduates in 1990 earned an average of 23.6 credits; by 2009, the number of credits eamed climbed to 27.2, and graduating students completed 400 more hours of instructional time than their 1990 counterparts. SOURCE: National Center for Education Statistics CONFIDENCE IN PUBLIC SCHOOLS 39% of people polled by Gallup in 1983 said they had "a great deal" or "quite a lot" of confidence in public K-12 schools. 29% of people responded the same way when Gallup polled them in 2012. It was the lowest such percentage since Gallup first began including public schools in its survey in 1973.
