It is mainly focused on the reduction of waste, and conserving natural resources. It seeks to reduce the harmful impact of the fashion industry on the environment.
Sustainable fashion helps in the promotion of minimal wastage, conserving energy, conserving natural resources, and supporting the fair and ethical treatment of employees.
The key concepts of sustainable fashion are:
1. Ethical sourcing: Ethical sourcing is nothing but fair labor practices and following workers' rights throughout the process from resourcing the material to production, and shipment of the goods to the stores it ensures that the workers are not exploited and are working in a safe environment and freedom from exploitation.
2. Eco-friendly practices: Practices such as the usage of renewable energy, conserving energy wherever possible, and usage of recycled fabric materials to reduce the carbon footprints of the fashion industry. Examples of eco-friendly practices include the usage of organic cotton fabrics, hemp, bamboo fibers, and recycled fabrics.
3. Slow fashion: It motivates people to buy less and invest in the quality of the clothes. This helps in the reduction of fast fashion cultures that do not follow any ethical practices. Fast fashion makes consumer wardrobes outdated as they are constantly updating more designs which has increased the consumption of new clothes and the wastage of present clothes with them. Slow fashion promotes in reduction of the impact done by fast fashion trends.
4. Transparency: It is important to be transparent in each step of the process like production, manufacturing, labor practices, and trade practices allowing the consumers to know detailed information about the brand so that they can make informed choices on the clothing brand.
5.3 R’s of sustainability: The three R’s of sustainability are reuse, reduce and recycle. Reuse in sustainability means you must use the clothes multiple times. Reducing sustainability means buying fewer clothes, following slow fashion, and using your creativity to mismatch the clothes in your wardrobe. In recycling, you can thrift your clothes or donate your clothes or you can also sell your clothes to reduce waste.
