A Passport to Global Citizenship

A PASSPORT TO GLOBAL CITIZENSHIP RAISING A CHILD WHO CAN THRIVE ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD As technology dissolves borders, today's students are graduating into a world that's more inter-connected than ever. Today's careers are more global than ever before 1950 $600 Billion (in 2015 dollars) World trade in goods has expanded 2013 $18.9 Trillion more than 30-fold since 1950. 500 1000 1500 2000 (Dollars) 57% 71% 57% of multinational companies said they planned to transfer even more employees abroad 71% of millennials worldwide reported that they want to work overseas during their in the future. career. = 1 million Americans Working abroad can bring Over 6 million Americans are working opportunities for graduates to take abroad–the highest number ever on new roles, advance their careers, recorded. and build a global network of contacts. Outside the office, graduates will travel more and think about global problems more than previous generations 75% 40% PASSPORT 75% of millenials want to travel abroad as much as possible. 40% of millennials indicated that they can and want to have a global impact. A Global Mindset MAIN GOAL: Graduates are more and more likely to find themselves living abroad; they should be prepared to succeed anywhere in the world. Success in the inter-connected world of tomorrow means more than just learning a foreign language. STUDENTS NEED TO: BUILD RELATIONAL SKILLS, NOT JUST BOOK SMARTS Students should learn how to collaborate and compromise. These social skills are needed to navigate complex and diverse situations in an inter-connected world. Give students practice by enrolling them in programs that feature project-based learning, where students work in groups to solve problems. CULTIVATE CREATIVITY AND INNOVATION Students should graduate ready to use creativity to apply what they know. Find a school or program that infuses the curriculum with opportunities to innovate. LEARN TO SOLVE PROBLEMS, NOT TO REGURGITATE KNOWLEDGE We don't know what tomorrow's global future will hold. Students should develop problem-solving approaches that can be applied to new questions across borders. BECOME FLUENT IN A FOREIGN LANGUAGE 25% 25% of companies say that a majority of their workers need some foreign language skills. Not only does learning a language dissolve barriers between cultures, but also helps students to develop curiosity about the world around them. An early start-when student's brains are most ready to absorb a new language-is critical. KNOW THAT GLOBAL CITIZENSHIP IS A MINDSET, NOT AN ELECTIVE Empathy-learning to stand in others' shoes and see problems from different perspectives-is critical. Students should gain exposure to peers and teachers from other countries every day, ideally in a school with international faculty and students, international campuses, and study abroad programs.
