The History of ONLINE EDUCATION The Journey of Distance Learning & Online Education: From how it all started to todajs disruptive innovations outside of the classroom START 1960s The very first virtual classroom. University of Illinois scientists created a classroom system based on linked computer terminals. 1970s Implementing computer assisted training and classwork. These courses required people to use the computers within a school or place of employment, so they were still a far cry from the expansive online programs people use today. 1980s Online only courses began emerging. While businesses began with software training programs, the largest corporations started utilizing online tools to minimize software distribution costs. 1990s People began to have the option of earning their degrees without actually having their professors present. Private universities, like the University of Phoenix, began to offer full academic degree programs online. PRESENT DAY 6.1 million students seeking degree online took at least one online course in 2010. OVER G MILLION • Beginning of online Education STUDENTS revolution: Coursera, Udacity are offering free online course from the top Universities.
