The ‘heart’ can be considered from two points of view as implied by the title. It is a mechanical feature of the human body but it has always been considered to have more ‘literate’ references...
as well. Poets for hundreds of years have interpreted it in an emotional way.
The books within this box explore the ‘heart’ through Shakespeare’s Sonnets which have been mechanically presented. This visualisation was achieved through recording readings of the Sonnets with a decibel meter, which gives you, as the reader, a tone of voice to follow, for example it highlights pauses in speech. The design could also be compared to the electrical activity seen on a heart monitor.
The purpose of this layout is also to reinforce the Iambic Pentameter which is the rhythm present in the Sonnets, this rhythm mirrors the beating of the ‘heart’.
