That's a 0.3% decrease from last year, (the 2012 figure was 26.6%). 7.6% of grades issued were A* - that's down from 7.9% in 2012 7.6% 18.7% The overall A-level pass rate has risen from 98.0% to 98.1% Who did better: boys or girls? 30 28.2 25 girls boys 24.7 Boys got more A* grades than girls - 7.9% compared with 7.4% but girls significantly outperformed boys at both A and B grade 19.3 15 18.0 10 7.4 7.9 A* A B Gender-dominated subjects Physics has become an even more male-dominated subject at A-level, with a 3.8% increase in entries by males compared with a 0.2% increase by females .. .. Males 79.3% Females 20.7% But English is a female-dominated subject, and the percentage rate of males taking this subject is falling •. Males 28.2% Females 71.8% What are the most popular subjects? Mathematics 10.35% Biology 7.52% Psychology 6.59% The most popular subject was English This subject accounted for 10.51% of all A-levels History 6.13% Chemistry 6.09% Art & Design 5.18% taken Increases and decreases in entries Below are the subjects that have had the highest increase and decrease in A-level entries Economics +7.4% Chemistry +5.2% Further Maths +4.5% Spanish +4.1% Communication Studies -16.6% Physical Education Performing/ Expressive Ãrts -11.7% Critical Thinking -11.4% -14.5% Foreign languages Although entries for Spanish increased this year, traditional modern foreign languages continue to decline in popularity Collectively these subjects have seen entries fall 17.8% since 2008 spanish up 4.1% german down 11.1% french down 9.9% Hot spots for A grades The proportion of exams graded at A grade or higher is highest in Northern Ireland followed by the south and east of England A*-A North East 22.0% North West 23.8% Yorks/Humber 23.2% West Midlands 23.8% - East Midlands 23.4% - Eastern Region 27.8% - South West 27.7% South East 29.4% London 28.3% Wales 22.9% Northern Ireland 30.7% "Today is all about celebrating the achievements of A-level students.
