The deinstitutionalization of status offenders or the DSO provision, which means that the children who were adjudged with a status offense should not be sent to jail and locked up, rather they should be held in juvenile facilities. The minors should be given counseling sessions, mentoring, family support, alternate education.
The DSO provision ensured that the status offenders should get help from the human services agency instead of the justice system.
Adult Jail removal: The JJDPA prohibited jailing for minors.
Sight and Sound separation: Under this protection, the status offenders should not be confined in an institution where there are adult offenders. There must be sight and sound separation between the two.
