A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE GI BILL® 1919 > Congress passes the Rehabilitation Act of 1919, offering a monthly assistance allowance to veterans Rehabilitation Act disabled in World War I. 1940> Selective Training and Service Act The Selective Training and Service Act entitles veterans to job reinstatement and provides training and rehabilitation for disabled veterans. 1944 > The Serviceman's Readjustment Act (GI Bill® of Rights) offers veterans unemployment benefits, education assistance, and low interest loans. Serviceman's Readjustment Act 1956> The Orphans Educational Assistance Act makes entitles education benefits Orphans Educational Assistance to eligible spouses and widows of disabled or deceased veterans. Act 1966 > The Veterans Readjustment Benefits Act provides education benefits, home and farm loans, employment counseling and placement services for Vietnam Veterans. Veterans Readjustment Benefits Act 1984> The Montgomery GI Bill® Program tests requiring a monthly pay reduction for active duty personnel during their first year of service in exchange for education assistance. Montgomery GI Bill Program 1987 > The Montgomery GI Bill® (Active Duty) Educational Assistance Program + is made permanent by Congress.
