Obesity has more than doubled in children & tripled in adolescents in the past 30 years. HOW MUCH PHYSICAL ACTIVITY DO CHILDREN NEED? 60 The U.S. Department of Health & Human Services recommends that youth participate in at least 60 minutes of physical activity daily. For each additional school day per week that adolescents participated in physical education, the odds of being an overweight adult decreased by 5%. Increasing physical education instruction in kindergarten & Ist grade by just one hour per week could reduce the number of overweight youth by as much as 10% nationally. School administration support, effective physical education instructors, & focus on staff training have been identified as the factors most important for successful & sustainable PE implementation.
